Positioning work requires precise location data to track and control a dynamic activity. In many applications, positioning sensing is done by rotary encoders, also known as shaft angle encoders or simply encoders. These sensors convert the mechanical angular position of the drive shaft or gear shaft into electrical signals that can be processed by the control system.

Absolute rotary encoders provide unique positioning values at any instant between the moment of switch-on and the moment of power-off. It does so by scanning a coded material. All location information in these systems is associated with a programmed code. Even rotations that occur while the system is powered off can be converted into precise positioning values by the encoder as soon as power is turned back on.

Incremental encoders can start from any starting point and measure the angle by calculating the periodic rate of change of the pattern on a material. This measurement method cannot generate absolute positioning values of the measurement signal internally, so the starting position must be initialized to the reference point before all positioning tasks are started. This must be done both when switching on the control system and when any encoder operation is interrupted.
