Tactile Switch Definition

Tactile switches are switches that are used every day but are almost never seen, hidden under each button of the device. Although it is small and thin, it has high reliability and can ensure operation for years or even decades. A button switch is a small electromechanical device designed to be mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB).

A push button helps in closing an open electronic circuit or the reverse temporarily during the time it is pressed. It has a small spring which helps it to return to its original position when the user takes the pressure off the button.

There are mainly two types of push-buttons:
Normally open (NO) : A circuit with a normally open push-button is open by default. When the user presses the button, the circuit becomes complete and the current starts flowing through it.
Normally closed (NC): A circuit with a normally closed push-button is closed by default. The circuit breaks on pressing the button.

How Tactile Switches Work

Touch switches usually work with elastic materials that will bounce back when pressed. For example, membrane switches are considered tactile switches because they are made of elastic materials. They have a webbing made of elastic material (such as silicone rubber), which is placed around the center of the circuit.
When you press the tactile switch, you will feel a "slap" sensation. Elastic materials make them feel this physical. It will bounce back to its original upright position, so you know that the tactile switch can recognize your command and change the position of the circuit.
